Entrustable Professional Activities
What and Why EPAs?
Postgraduate education in Nephrology has always included regular assessment of trainees' competence in rounds and clinics. In the near future, this process will be formalized in structured units called Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) supported by the SWIF/ISFM. An EPA in Nephrology describes a typical professional activity carried out by the trainee and subsequently assessed as to the degree the trainee is able to perform it – at all and with or without supervision. Find more about EPAs on the SWIF/ISFM website in German or French.
The Swiss Nephrology EPA group assembled a set of 42 potential EPAs and set up a questionnaire for the nephrology public to rate every single EPA – the final set of EPAs will form a backbone of the nephrology training. The assessment of young nephrologists is therefore critical.
